Cisco Wires Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic

Cisco Logo ImageMore than 400 disabled veterans are expected to ski the Rocky Mountains at the 22st National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic in Snowmass Village, Colo., near Aspen, from March 30-April 4. With Cisco providing communication equipment, volunteers, and other supplies, recently wounded veterans from the War on Terror will be able to participate in the largest annual rehabilitation event of its kind in the world.

The clinic is open to all U.S. military veterans with spinal cord injuries or disease, visual impairments, certain neurological conditions, orthopedic amputations or other disabilities, who receive care at Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care facilities.

During the six-day program, veterans will learn adaptive Alpine and Nordic skiing and be introduced to a variety of other adaptive activities and sports, such as rock climbing, scuba diving, snowmobiling and sled hockey. The U.S. Secret Service will also teach a course on self-defense for people with disabilities.

Cisco’s support will benefit more than 200 first-time veterans and nearly 30 active duty combat wounded soldiers to attend the Clinic. Cisco will also provide a group of employees to volunteer throughout the duration of the event.

“We are humbled and privileged to be part of an event that honors those who have served in our military,” said Diane Gongaware, civilian operations director. “This year marks the fifth anniversary of Cisco’s participation in the National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic as volunteers and donators. The IP equipment we will provide creates an integrated communications network, allowing the veterans and volunteers to be fully connected, at every level, throughout the activities. We are grateful for the chance to exhibit our continued commitment to public sector IP networking and to our Cisco volunteers who look forward to this event every year.”

Cisco is the worldwide leader in networking that transforms how people connect, communicate and collaborate. As the leading provider of IP networking for the government, Cisco is committed to ensuring that agencies maximize their investments to achieve their mission. Defense, intelligence and civilian agency executives can better meet mission-critical requirements despite limited resources and increasing threats around the world via Cisco IP networking. Cisco’s IP networking enables connected government via seamless delivery of voice, video, data and mobility communications within and across agencies.

With Cisco’s IP networking, agency officials can work collaboratively regardless of location or device. Cisco’s holistic approach ensures that critical information, applications and services are available anytime to address any challenge.

In addition to the generous host sponsorship of Cisco, the event is co-sponsored by the VA and Disabled American Veterans (DAV).

“Cisco’s commitment to this unique rehabilitative event is a testament to the company’s care and concern for our nation’s sick and disabled veterans,” said DAV National Adjutant Arthur H. Wilson. “The ‘Miracles on a Mountainside’ would not be possible without the generosity of companies like Cisco and the support they provide.”

The VA (www.va.gov) is a government agency that runs 1,300 health care facilities for veterans across the United States. DAV (www.dav.org) is a nonprofit, Congressionally chartered veterans service organization with a membership of more than 1.3 million wartime disabled veterans. The Winter Sports Clinic provides participants with a full range of sports, recreation and educational opportunities.
